I believe the time has come to stop making people pay for intellectual property. That is why the entire text of The Ascent of Humanity is on line. I am happy to offer it as a gift. If you would like to sustain me in my work, you may give a gift to me as well. If you want to give me money, of which I am often in urgent need, I invite you to utilize one of the following payment options.

1. Make a payment with Paypal (via credit card or your Paypal account). Because Paypal assesses fees, I ask that you input a minimum of $1.00 (otherwise your net payment could be negative). When you click the "Pay now" button, you will be taken to a Paypal screen to confirm your payment.

3. Accept this book as a gift, and pass it on to the world in some other form. Somehow, some way, the gift will circulate back to me, and through me to that which Gave me this book.

How much should you pay? Choose an amount you feel good about. The cover price of the print edition is $25, so you might go with that. You may feel that an online edition is less valuable (and there are certainly fewer costs to the author, publisher, and planet) -- if so, then pay less. Maybe half, maybe just a few dollars. If you have a suspicious attitude toward me for requesting payment, or imagine I am wealthy, then by all means pay with a gift to someone else.

A time is coming when we will shift from a profit-taking economy to a gift economy, from an economy of "how can I take the most?" to "how can I best give of my gifts?" I would like to begin living in the new world today. A true gift is not forced, so if you feel in any way coerced or manipulated into paying for my work, I request that you accept it for free for now. Otherwise, pay an amount you feel good about. You will have a feeling of fairness, or upliftment, or generosity, or clearness -- the feeling you get when you have given a gift perfectly appropriate to a situation.
